History of the Holy Face Icon The Holy Face of Christ, or the Image Not-Made-By-Hands. The original image was created when Abgar, King of Edessa, sent his painter Ananias to find Jesus and paint an image of Him. Ananias, was unable to get near to Jesus and attempted to paint from a distance but was unsuccessful. Jesus soon after wiped his face with a towel, and his divine image was miraculously imprinted on the cloth. The image was given to Ananias and sent back to King Abgar, who was healed of leprosy upon seeing it. The Holy Face of Christ is considered one of the earliest icons of the Church.
