The Iconik Leather Satchel

The basic structural design comes from one of my favorite leather crafters, Dark Horse Workshop, who does incredible Viking-themed work. However, I liked this design because of the big flap that begged for something a little different - saint stuff. I wanted to push my leather carving skills with the first one of these that I made, and apparently it was a hit. Like the EDC Satchel bag, it’s your basic cross-body bag, but much bigger. The main structure is made with a softer, more supple leather, such as the chrome-tanned Texas oil utility leather, but it has a large cut of carve-ready veg tan on the flap ready for your favorite image, saint, etc. It also sports a couple of other places for artwork underneath the flap. Also under the flap is a perfectly sized pouch for things like your keys, wallet, and sunglasses. The inside is spacious enough for books, notebooks, or other miscellanea, with a dividing wall to separate items. The possibilities for this one are almost quite literally endless. I’m calling it the “Iconik” because the first design I made with it was of an icon of Christ - the Deësis Mosaic in Hagia Sophia in Constantinople…er…Istanbul (we’ll come back to that later. In force…). This mosaic was made in the 13th century and has somehow survived centuries - ergo the partial “damage” at the bottom of this image.
